The Oakland Cannery Collective, with Oakland’s independently owned small- business community and arts organizations are working together to preserve Oakland’s authentic, rich culture in the face of gentrification that is displacing the very people and communities that make our city diverse and unique. Together, we are producing a free, all ages one-day music, art and culture festival on Labor Day Weekend, September 1, 2018 in support of community arts from 12noon-10pm.
The festival, “FESTAC”, will celebrate our diversity and pride through live performances, artisan “studios on the streets”, makers fair style and swap meet, chefs and Bay Area artist showcasing their talents. All furniture from Berkeley’s Urban Ore will be for sale and contribute to the fundraising aspect.
In under 4 months, “OCC” had launched a successful media campaign and lobbied lawmakers to protect work-live spaces from displacement, in order to promote co-existence of artists and newly emerging businesses. We received unanimous support from city-council and cannabis commissions while assisted the Mayors office of “city policy for art spaces”. This collaborative community effort led to the rapid development of the “FESTAC” cultural arts festival. Now is the time to work together as unified local artistic communities to enact policies that will protect, engage, and enhance art and cultural activities. With your support we can create a solid foundation to organize all communities and represent these issues.
