Newman Center for the Performing Arts Swings Into 20th Anniversary with BANDALOOP
The Newman Center for the Performing Arts, a multi-disciplinary arts venue at the University of Denver that provides innovative, diverse, and thought-provoking performances and education opportunities, is excited to announce a free, sky-high performance by BANDALOOP in honor of its 20th anniversary.
Founded in 1991 by Amelia Rudolph and currently led be artistic director Melecio Estrella, BANDALOOP is an Oakland, California-based vertical dance performance group that celebrates the human spirit, nature, and communities through dance that uses climbing technology to expand and challenge what is possible. The movement and climbing-trained dancers will perform LOOM:FIELD, a large-scale, site-specific outdoor vertical dance piece that deepens and challenges our perspective on the art and industry of textiles. The performance will take place on Thursday, September 29, at 4:30 p.m. along the walls of the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science and the Sie Complex (2201 S Gaylord St.) The event is free and open to the community.
LOOM:FIELD unites vertical dance, spoken word, fabric manipulation and original music by Ben Juodvalkis, featuring guest vocalist Destani Wolf, turning the building’s façade into a giant loom where stories and dances interlace. For more information about BANDALOOP, please visit www.bandaloop.org.
BANDALOOP’s performance will be the centerpiece of a larger festival in celebration of the Newman Center’s 20th anniversary. The festival will feature an afternoon filled with food trucks, beverages, concessions and an interactive loom demonstration from Fancy Tiger Crafts. Local artists Playground Ensemble, Presenting Denver and students from DU’s Lamont School of Music will provide additional entertainment.
